Woven Recycled Plastic Bags

STEAM Project by Maria Patricia Umali

Plastic bags is only one of the growing threat to our nature. It causes enormous adverse effects on the environment, litters the land, block bodies of water across the globe, and kills marine animals.

What can we do to prevent using plastic bags, or how can we recycle and reuse them?

LEARNING OBJECTIVE

Fifth graders are learning about pollution and waste management in science. The students will use 21st-century skills to create a project that will significantly impact the school community's awareness of plastic pollution.

SMART OBJECTIVES

Fifth graders in collaboration with Elementary Eagle Leaders (student leadership) will promote recycling plastic bags in elementary. Students will focus on recycling and reusing plastic bags by making woven rugs and fashionable woven bags from recycled plastic bags.

The final project will be presented to the school community on the ES Winter Assembly, December 20, 2021 through fundraising to donate to Roots and Shoots.

- 21st Century Skills -

Communication

Grade five students will make posters to collect plastic bags within one month. Posters will be displayed in hallways, main entrances of the building.

Poster will be played on the lobby TV.

Printed flyers will be distributed in each class for students to bring home.

Collaboration

The students leadership and fifth graders will meet every Friday afternoon to collect plastic bags in every class in elementary. The collected plastic bags will be piled in Tinkerlab (STEAM LAB).

They will meet every Mondays of October and November to begin weaving plastic bags to make rugs and fashionable bags.

Critical Thinking and Problem Solving

Students will design rugs and bags out of recycled plastic bags. They will plan ways to present the finished projects to school community in Winter Assembly in December 20, 2021 to raise fund to donate to Roots and Shoots.

SCIENCE (Week 1)

Students will learn how plastics are made. Its life cycle and looking at the impact of plastics in the environment.

Students will be working in groups of 4. They will create a presentation of their choice (powerpoint, videos and or role plays).

The groups will research on ways to solve the problem. The presentation should cover the impact of plastic to human and environment.

The groups will have jobs (researchers and presenters)

Language learners and learning support students are grouped with academically strong students.

TECHNOLOGY (Week 2)

During learning phase, a group's choice for presentation through powerpoint. An option of recorded video or role playing for language learners and learning support students.

Poster and flyers making on Canva.

ENGINEERING AND DESIGN (Week 3)

Understanding Design Cycle

Understanding Design Cycle

Empathize - Who do they want this project?

Define - Why are they doing this project? What problem can it solve?

Ideate - Brainstorm for ideas and design.

Prototype - Doing the project

Test - Are rugs and bags durable? Will bags be able to hold weight?

SHARING (WEEK 4)

This week, students will share a fundraising activity held in Winter Assembly where parents and the school community can witness their designs and finished projects. Donations will go to Roots and Shoots.

ASSESSMENT

Formative Assessment for students will occur from the beginning of the activity - from creating a presentation of their learning to creating their projects, presenting and sharing their projects in the school community.
